Last time I showed you this room there was no one here. My question then was is the room empty or full of potential. Well, we found the #potential. This afternoon I teamed up with Bryson O'Neill and Sierra Graybeal to bring you the next version of Business AfterSchool at Coffman Engineers in Spokane. Students from the #Spokane region got to learn more about the #engineering profession. One cool story that I learned today, Artyom Gurdyumov is a current engineer for Coffman. How did he learn about Coffman Engineers? When he attended a Business AfterSchool when he was getting his education. Last night was a momentous occasion as we honored Cathy McMorris Rodgers for her incredible dedication and service to our region!

It was another busy day for AWB President Kris Johnson as he joined the Greater Spokane Incorporated Fly-In to Washington D.C. A high point was giving retiring Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers the inaugural Rich Hadley Community Service Award. Former U.S. Speaker of the House John Boehner was there to thank and congratulate McMorris Rodgers for her service. The group also visited the Korean ambassador to talk with a key overseas trading partner, as well as heading to the National Association of Manufacturers - NAM and having a briefing on Fairchild Air Force Base . We appreciate our partners across Washington that help us advocate for Washington employers, especially our friends at GSI!

We're excited to announce that our D.C. Fly-In delegation, including Cathy McMorris Rodgers, visited the Korean Embassy today for discussions on vital aspects of bilateral relations, cultural exchange, and economic collaboration. During the visit, our delegation engaged in fruitful discussions aimed at strengthening ties between our region and South Korea, exploring avenues for increased economic cooperation and investment, and fostering mutual understanding. Among other topics, the delegation discussed our strong agricultural ties, opportunities in advanced materials manufacturing, and shared healthcare workforce goals.  CEO Alisha Benson presented Ambassador Cho with a thoughtful gift of roasted coffee beans from Indaba Coffee Roasters, complemented by artwork from Ms. Wells Kindergarten class Spokane Public Schools, presented by Education and Talent past chair Traci McGlathery STCU . Chief of Staff Alex Scott from the City of Spokane  added to the occasion by presenting gifts from the SISTER CITIES ASSOCIATION OF SPOKANE, Gonzaga University, and the Spokane Indians Baseball Club. These gifts included original mementos from the Korean pavilion of Expo ’74, a Spokane Indians EXPO 74 jersey, and a signed Gonzaga basketball jersey from Jun Seok Yeo.

Last week Avista hosted the latest successful Business AfterSchool.   We had students from Deer Park High School, Lacrosse, Wilbur Creston School District (WA), Spokane Public Schools and Mead School District.   The students learned about how Avista gets the #electricity from the turbine to the meter box, how they keep houses warm (and safe) with natural gas, and what maintenance needs to be done to keep systems running smoothly.   Avista prepares their employees for careers like this through #apprenticeships and capitalized on this experience by having employees that are currently in the apprenticeship programs teaching the high schoolers.   Thank you Avista and Lauren Huckaba for hosting this experience and investing in the #workforce of tomorrow.   Greater Spokane Incorporated   Thank you to Presenting Sponsor STCU, Supporting Sponsors Eastern Washington University and Gesa Credit Union, and Event Sponsors CHAS Health and Washington 529 the GET program. #workforcedevelopment #careerpathways #apprentice #utilities
