Appreciate Kyle Niehenke joining our Understanding the Business session to present on growth, development and future energy needs in Adams County.

Community Builder | Engineer | Economic Developer | Executive Director at Adams County Development Council

Had the opportunity to sit down with Avista last week and discuss all things Adams County. This presentation was in-person to an auditorium full of employees, and was also streamed to all employees off site. This was part of a series by Avista called "Understanding the Business" where once a month different departments and regions within Avista present on their portion of the business ecosystem within the utility to their own employees. I sincerely appreciate the support from Martin Garcia, Othello District Manager for Avista, and the invite from Avista leadership to bring me in to discuss our county. I spent most of the presentation talking about the growth, both in industry and in population, we have seen in the county. I definitely highlighted our "big 4" in Othello: McCain Foods, J.R. Simplot Company, SVZ USA Washington, Inc., and Lineage. I also got to spend valuable time discussing the trends we are seeing from inquires coming from both the state and local site selectors. Without a doubt, the projects that are looking to Washington are looking to capitalize on our affordable and environmentally friendly electrical power. The electrical load of these inquires is substantial, so planning for increased electrical capacity is important. Just look to our neighboring Grant County, with Group14 Technologies and Sila Nanotechnologies Inc. recently locating in Moses Lake. These companies are going to have a substantial positive impact not only in Grant County, but in Adams County as well, as our workforce turns to them for new opportunities in a very new industry for our state. By having the conversation about the electrical needs of our area now, we can be better prepared to grow our existing industry and attract new ones to Adams County and Central Washington. There is substantial opportunity to grow Adams County - from Othello to Ritzville. #EconomicDevelopment #ChooseWashington #GrowAdamsCountyWA

Investing in the Workforce of Tomorrow

Last week Avista hosted the latest successful Business AfterSchool.   We had students from Deer Park High School, Lacrosse, Wilbur Creston School District (WA), Spokane Public Schools and Mead School District.   The students learned about how Avista gets the #electricity from the turbine to the meter box, how they keep houses warm (and safe) with natural gas, and what maintenance needs to be done to keep systems running smoothly.   Avista prepares their employees for careers like this through #apprenticeships and capitalized on this experience by having employees that are currently in the apprenticeship programs teaching the high schoolers.   Thank you Avista and Lauren Huckaba for hosting this experience and investing in the #workforce of tomorrow.   Greater Spokane Incorporated   Thank you to Presenting Sponsor STCU, Supporting Sponsors Eastern Washington University and Gesa Credit Union, and Event Sponsors CHAS Health and Washington 529 the GET program. #workforcedevelopment #careerpathways #apprentice #utilities

Allisha Corley believes her life transformation is a miracle. For more than ten years, she lived on and off the streets, battling her demons. After discovering she was pregnant, she entered an in-patient program for pregnant women, overcoming her addictions. From there, she entered the DHS Work First Program, which connected her with Christ Kitchen in Spokane.   With support from Christ Kitchen, she’s gone from homeless and addicted to employed and thriving.   Allisha is an example of the program's success. She is a job trainer, executive assistant and catering specialist at Christ Kitchen.   Christ Kitchen offers women like Allisha a lifeline, providing job training for those who are impoverished and disenfranchised. The program has a 96% retention rate, which means graduates remain functioning members of society after they leave the program.   The organization meets women where they are emotionally and academically, allowing them to heal and learn at their own pace. In addition to learning valuable employment abilities, women gain a sense of community and life skills necessary for the day-to-day.   Upon graduation from the program, Christ Kitchen collaborates with local hiring partners to find full-time positions offering steady income and benefits such as health and retirement.   Avista has been a long-term supporter of the organization, recently awarding it a Named Communities Investment Fund grant to support its programs. The grant will help Christ Kitchen continue to lift women like Allisha up with skills and employment experience to enable living-wage job opportunities. Read more about Allisha’s story - https://lnkd.in/gNU_N6qf Avista's Named Communities Investment Fund (NCIF) was approved by the Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission, as part of the company's Clean Energy Investment Plan (CEIP) to meet compliance targets for the state's Clean Energy Transformation Act (CETA, 2019). The NCIF will invest up to $5 million annually in projects, programs, and initiatives that benefit Avista's Washington electric customers residing in historically disadvantaged and vulnerable communities (i.e., "Named Communities"). Community-based projects will be selected for funding through a competitive grant application process. Application information and eligibility guidelines can be found at myavista.com/NCIF.
